Frequency-dependent seedling predation by rodents: growth and survival of Quercus wutaishanica in two habitats

چکیده
Abstract Rodents attack oak (Quercus wutaishanica) seeds based on their sizes and frequencies before germination. However, the predation of post-germination (seedling cotyledons) is not well studied. Here, we only tested preference rodents for Q. wutaishanica seedling cotyledons frequency large- versus small-seeded (FLS), but also evaluated effects seedlings growth survival in different habitats. We transplanted with FLS set as 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7 1:9, respectively, forest gap under canopy Liupan Mountains National Nature Reserve Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Northwest China. The results showed that: (i) 1–7 days after transplanting seedlings, prefer cotyledon large-seeded seedings while were preferred 8–60 days, positive frequency-dependent was observed. (ii) preyed on, apical buds bitted off, whole uprooted, which mostly occurred canopy. At end a growing season, rate gaps more than twice that canopies. (iii) If would be affected, severely inhibited when bud bitten off. These provide new insights into coexistence between phenotypes, reveal ecological characteristics deciduous Quercus regeneration.

Frequency-dependent seed predation by rodents on Sonoran Desert winter annual plants.
Numerous mechanisms may allow species to coexist. We tested for frequency-dependent predation, a mechanism predicted by theory and established as a foraging behavior for many types of animals. Our field test included multiple prey species exposed in situ to multiple predator species and individuals to determine whether the prey species experienced predation patterns that were frequency dependen...

abstract in written mode of language, metadiscourse markers are used commonly to help writers in general and academic writers in particular to produce coherent and professional texts. the purpose of the present study was to compare introduction sections of applied linguistics and physics articles regarding their use of interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers based on the model pro...

Estimates of abundance commonly are used for assessing quality of wildlife habitat. However, disparities between abundance and fitness parameters make the utility of abundance for predicting quality of habitat questionable. We used survival of rodents and rates of capture to assess quality of habitat in greasewood scrub and sandhill prairie habitats at the United States Army Pueblo Chemical Dep...
متن کاملSeed germination and seedling growth of two Pseudobombax species (Malvaceae) with contrasting habitats from Brazilian Cerrado.
Pseudobombax tomentosum and P. longiflorum are common trees in the Cerrado region, but the former species is more common in forest edges while the later is present in open cerrado areas. This work aimed to investigate differences in seed germination and seedling growth in these species, from seed collected from Cerrado areas in Central Brazil. For this, a seed germination experiment was designe...
